Should You Invest in Book Editing and Proofreading? Costs, Tips & a Free Checklist for New Authors

Wondering if book editing and proofreading are worth it?

If you want to avoid negative reader reviews, the answer is yes.

In this blog, you’ll learn the types, costs, and how to choose the right expert.

But before we drive in, let’s first clear up the difference between the two.

Editing vs Proofreading: What’s the Difference?

New authors generally confuse these two terms. They seem the same but involve different processes.

Editing cleans up the structure and flow, and proofreading catches the leftover errors.

Here’s an editing vs proofreading comparison table for your understanding:

Now, let’s understand what these two processes are and why you need to invest in them.

What is Book Editing?

Book editing is the first quality check for your manuscript. It involves three types of editing: developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting.

Editors clean up anything that feels off, sounds repetitive, or breaks the flow of your book.

They polish your writing by rewriting unclear parts.

Why Invest in Book Editing?

Professional editors are your quality checkers. They edit your manuscript so it meets the publishing standards.

There are three ways to find professional editors:

  1. Work with book publishers who give you the full package with editors

  2. Go for agencies specialized in book editing

  3. Or, hire freelance book editors

Let’s break down the differences between agency editors, publishing editors, and freelancers.

Book Editing Costs in India

Book editing charges in India vary based on the kind of editing you need, how experienced the editor is, and how complex your book is.

As per The Himalayan Writing Retreat, the cost varies between ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000.

Most freelancers and editing companies charge based on your word count or the number of editing rounds you need.

The per-word price goes high when the editor comes with more than 6-7 years of experience.

For example, a friend of mine who writes detective and thriller books charges ₹5 per word for editing. Another editor, with over 15 years of experience as a newspaper sub-editor, charges ₹6 per word.

Editors charge  ₹0.25 per word for basic editing (which I do not recommend).

Full-time editors with book publishing experience usually charge around  ₹0.40 per word.

Editing Price in India Summary:

  • Freelancers: ₹0.25–₹6 per word

  • Agencies: ₹10,000–₹1,00,000 per package

  • Publishing houses: Often included

So, you need to factor in your budget and the editor’s experience to make your final decision.

If you cannot invest in book editing, consider asking a friend.

The key here is to get opinions and suggestions from someone not involved in the writing process.

IMP Note: Editors have to create a unique Style sheet for your book that includes spelling, punctuation, capitalization, hyphenation, number styles, character and place names, timelines, and any special formatting or usage notes to maintain consistency throughout the manuscript.

In case an editor who does not know about this service is included in the copyediting; then that editor might not be certified and you are being scammed. The same style sheet has to be used through out the developmental editing to proofreading stage.

Now that we have covered editing, let’s understand proofreading.

What is Proofreading?

Proofreading involves reading the book content from the reader’s perspective.

They identify errors in grammar, spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, and consistency.

For example, correcting repeating words missed during the editing phase.

Why Do You Need Proofreading After Editing?

Proofreaders help you give the technical edits from a third-person perspective. Unlike editors, they are ruthless critics.

They identify every big and small error that both your editor and you may have missed.

Not all readers are the same. Some readers are particular about grammar and spelling. When they come across too many language issues, they’re likely to point them out publicly.

For example, one of my acquaintances published a fanfic book on Wattpad. Being a newbie, she didn’t focus on editing. After three months, she started receiving comments on spelling and grammar errors. She decided to take down the book and rectify the mistakes before republishing.

Now, what she did may not be possible for everyone, especially if you are going for print.

And if your brand is already out there, poor reviews could affect how people see you.

So, it’s wise to get your book proofread before it goes to print.

Proofreading Costs in India

Like editors, proofreaders charge on a per-word basis.

The prices may seem high, but the benefits and ROI make the investment worthwhile.

Book publishing companies generally provide book editing and proofreading services in their packages.

But if you hire an agency that handles both editing and proofreading, expect to pay roughly ₹0.50–₹0.70  per word.

Freelance book proofreaders in India also charge on a per-word basis. The charges vary based on experience.

Someone starting might quote ₹0.02 per word, whereas experienced proofreaders usually charge between ₹0.15 and ₹0.20.

The average proofreading charge in India is ₹0.10 per word.

In some countries, proofreaders also charge on an hourly basis.

Proofreading Price in India Summary:

  • New freelancers (1–2 years): ₹0.02–₹0.05 per word

  • Experienced freelancers (5+ years): ₹0.10–₹0.20 per word
