Writing with Sensitivity: How to Share Your Health Journey Without Spreading Misinformation

About 72% of people search for health information online, yet, nearly half admit they aren’t sure what’s actually trustworthy.
That’s a huge challenge and also a beautiful opportunity for anyone who feels called to share their own health story.
Your words can comfort, inspire, or connect and can remind someone they’re not alone.
But when we write about health, our words carry weight. A single sentence can influence how someone eats, moves, or even whether they see a doctor. That’s a lot of responsibility and it’s why writing with both heart and care matters so much.
Why health writing needs extra thought?
Unlike sharing a recipe or a travel story, health writing can directly affect the choices someone makes for themselves. It’s easy to slip from “this is my experience” into “this is what you should do”.
That’s why more and more writers, bloggers, and creators are choosing to tell their stories in a way that feels personal while still protecting their readers and themselves.
Some do this by being mindful on their own, while others lean on editors or ghostwriters who specialize in sensitive health storytelling.
Either way, here are some ways to keep your writing authentic, compassionate, and safe:
Keep it personal, not prescriptive
It’s natural to want to share what worked for you, especially when you’ve had a breakthrough. But small shifts in wording can change how your message sounds.
Compare these two lines:
“This helped me manage my symptoms”.
“This will help reduce your symptoms”.
The first is your truth. The second sounds like a promise and can be read as advice.
When in doubt, come back to your own story. Many health writers also find it helpful to have someone else read their work before publishing, just to make sure the tone feels supportive, not directive.

Add reliable sources where you can
Even if you’re sharing mostly from personal experience, adding in a few credible references builds trust. Think Mayo Clinic, CDC, or peer-reviewed studies from PubMed.
If research feels overwhelming, know that you’re not alone, fact-checking can take time.
That’s why, when I write for clients, I make sure their lived experience shines while also being backed by solid, balanced information.
Don’t skip the disclaimer
It may feel formal, but a disclaimer is simply a kind way to set boundaries. It tells your readers, “I’m sharing what helped me, but I’m not a medical professional”.
Even a simple note like:
“This story is based on my personal experience and is not meant as medical advice” can make a big difference for you and your readers.
Lead with clarity and compassion
Sometimes health writing slips into “you should” or “this is the best way.” Even with the best intentions, those words can feel complex.
Instead, try inviting language. Share your story in a way that sparks curiosity and leaves space for your readers’ own choices. Over time, that gentle, respectful tone builds deeper trust especially in long-form projects like books.

Sensitivity is everything
Topics like mental health, chronic illness, or trauma needs extra care. The words you choose can stir emotions, sometimes unexpectedly.
This doesn’t mean watering down your story. It means shaping it so readers feel included, respected, and safe. Often, that small shift in tone is what makes your story more accessible to the people who need it most.
Remember, you don’t have to do it alone
Sharing your health journey is the best. It takes courage, vulnerability, and heart, but it can also stir up tender memories or raise questions about what’s “too much” to share.
